In recent years, a lot of attention has been drawn to the question how the engaging and gameful mechanisms found in video games can be transferred to non-game applications in order to engage users in a sustainable fashion. In short: we are talking about gamification! Throughout the scene people claim that companies can hugely benefit from adapting game mechanisms to the design of their products and services. Jane McGonigal, one of the leading figures in the field of game research, even argues that video games “are fulfilling genuine human needs that the real world is currently unable to satisfy”. MEETROPOLY will start to look into the phenomenon of gamification more closely by analyzing practical and theorectical studies, conducting interviews with leading game experts, reviewing recent publications, and by following the discussions on the web. MEETROPOLY aims to answer the question where gamified features can help to retain customers and create loyal behavior by simply making the products more fun. Therefore, we aim to detect key elements that are useful for the development of gamified applications.
